Joanne Kirk has been found in contempt of court for inflating a claim for personal injury damages after being involved in a road accident. The case was brought by insurer NIG, which welcomed the judgment. The ruling was the first time an insurer had successfully obtained a conviction under such circumstances. Ms Kirk was fined £2,500 and ordered to pay a portion of the insurer's costs for the case. Kate Lotts, director for specialist claims at RBS Insurance, said the decision would now give insurers a means to pursue both their policyholders and fraudulent third parties.
